Healing a tattoo properly is essential to prevent infection, preserve the ink, and ensure the best long-term appearance. Here’s a detailed guide on how to take care of a new tattoo during the healing process

  • Leave the bandage on for 2–24 hours (or as advised by your artist).

  • Wash your hands before touching the tattoo.

  • Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap (soap optional)

  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Do not rub.

  • Apply a thin layer of an unscented moisturizer.

  • Do not over-moisturize. Too much can suffocate the skin and draw out ink.

  • Wash the tattoo 1–2 times per day and moisturize afterward.

  • Expect redness, swelling, and some oozing (plasma and ink) — this is normal during the weeping phase (first couple days)

  • The tattoo will begin to flake and peel like a sunburn. This is normal.

  • Do not pick or scratch at the peeling skin. Let it fall off naturally.

  • Continue to moisturize 2–3 times daily with a fragrance-free moisturizer.

  • Avoid direct sunlight, pools, hot tubs, soaking in water and excessive sweating.

  • At around 3–4 weeks, your tattoo should be mostly healed, but full healing can take up to 6 weeks, especially for large or detailed pieces.

  • Keep moisturizing after the tattoo heals for longevity.

  • What to Avoid

    • No scratching or picking at scabs or flakes.

    • No swimming or soaking (baths, hot tubs, oceans).

    • No direct sun exposure or tanning beds.

    • No tight clothing rubbing against the tattooed area.

If any of these occur, contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare provider
